Tip #1: Applesauce is a common Commodity food. While it is delicious on its own, there are plenty of other tasty ways to use it. It is a great fat substitute in baking cakes, muffins, and breads. Simply substitute half the amount of fat in a recipe with applesauce for lower fat baking. It is also a wonderful topping for potato pancakes and roasted or grilled pork.
Tip #2: Bran flakes can add a burst of flavor to your baking. Mix 1/2 cup bran flakes with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg and sprinkle over bread and muffin batter prior to baking.
Tip #3: Rice crisps can be eaten alone, as a topping for yogurt, or to make your own easy trail mix. Simply mix rice crisps, raisins, and your favorite type of nuts.
